I drive an old Mk2 Polo named Karo. She has crunchy old juiced up speakers that clip easily on bad mixes. Karo just reveals issues modern speakers won’t. She’s wise like that. She handles pro tracks just fine though, so it’s always been a way for me to check if a song was good enough to go.

Time for another update! Long time no post. If you

Time for another update! Long time no post. If you’re new here, I’m Doran! I make music and animations :).

A LOT happened in the last couple months. I started my own marketing campaign, landed a gig at Arrival Gallery (my first!), got some new gear, made prints of my art and even sold one! (the very first version of Ora the blue cat!)

Figuring out how I’d play live was really fun and still in progress, the gig was so nice it made me realise maybe I could get myself a bit more out there. So I took out my pedal from the closest, got it fixed (a bit of soldering was needed 🤓). And now I have a kickass setup to share in my next livestreams and … I am doing another gig at Arrival in October!

Will post more about it closer to the date :)

Oh and that marketing campaign has been going fairly well, considering I’m new to it and doing it DIY. It’s been a fun new challenge to learn the technical marketing side of things, but I went from 1-10 monthly listeners on Spotify to 600+ in a couple months :D!

Two Cats - Live! It has been such a blast to play

Two Cats - Live!

It has been such a blast to play my first live gig at @arrivalgalleryofficial . It was great to see these songs actually work outside the home studio. I did have doubts. Though I make my music to be as faithful as possible to what I can play and do live, the insecurity and imposter syndrome creeps in after you spend hours honing in a release and have it sounding all neat and you think: wait can I actually even play or sing that for real? This is the recording direct from my amp which I put back on the phone recording I had done, listening back I think I did OK. Ora didn’t seem to mind it??

To be honest, at first I wasn’t hyped by these kinds of posts. Sure they do well for the algorithm, but where’s the artistic value? But now I’ve worked more on the animations and trying to fit them in these types of posts somehow, it’s actually a really fun change of pace and feels more “me”. I don’t know how to actually describe it. But especially trying to see where I can fit Ora is a good laugh. He looks pretty at home on that hedge 🐱

I am working hard to improve my animations, I took pictures of sunsets and extracted a colour palette from it, then threw Ora in and added some shading. I think it really is starting to fit the vibe I am going for. This scene fits the soft Rhodes intro of Two Cats pretty well no? :)

Bifurcate (new demo 🎵)

Nujabes is a Japanese DJ who sadly passed away 2010. His ethereal and nostalgic sound defined lofi hip hop. From what I gather, he used to own a record shop which is how he started using samples on his tracks. He took a lot of inspiration from Latin American Jazz among other genres, and used a lot of samples from old jazz records. He often collaborated with rappers like Substantial and Shing02 among many others to add lyrics on his tracks. Personally what marks me and inspired me the most about his music is the sacred quality of his sound, every track sounds so solemn and shows a huge respect and love of the craft.

He’s always been a huge inspiration for me, so I decided to do a demo to just to try and recreate his sound and take what I learn in my music. In contrast, I don’t use samples, I played the guitar, performed the drums on my drum pad, play some string parts on top (if I had budget I’d own and play the instruments myself or hire an orchestra!). The most fun was trying to rap, not something I usually do, and even more challenge to imitate Substantial a bit and get the vocal sound right.

RIP Nujabes, thanks again for all the amazing music and inspiration 🙏
