"Return to the real world Doran!"

This may look like my usual iPad work, but it's all physical, tangible. You can take it and feel it, you can see it with your own eyes... If you're in my studio.

All this AI stuff sort of pushed me. Pushed me to think what I really wanted. But really, it's mostly seeing more and more Ghibli studio movies which convinced me. The human touch is everything, and it should be cherished as much as possible. Everything starts with hand drawn art now, just like Hayo Miyazaki starts an animation on paper.

Drawing like this with colourful pencils and markers reminds me of when I was a kid. Except I got a lot better at it. My favourite to draw was always 2D from Gorillaz. Funny my characters turn out to be sort of looking at him on the wall like, who's this dude?

It wooorks! Moni approves ♥️.

I would like to fix the world, but maybe fixing broken things is easier. This old cassette player was lying there for a while. It had a broken belt, and now it is back to life! But this makes it look so easy aha... It took a few hours, but those sweet tapey distorted sounds are very worth it.

Fixing and building things myself is something I love, from the music to this sort of stuff. I'm no pro at anything, but I love trying it all.

What's my story?

I love doing animation, but doing it by hand takes hours and means I can't share my work often. So instead, I did a new setup to share more of my songwriting process and improve my audio... This is one is going to be an emotional climax to the album I am working on. What do you think?

"Alright... Enough messing around"

I've been taking a lot of inspiration from Ghibli Studio and decided to pivot more to physical media to design my characters and animations. I've been working on this demonic character for the album, probably called Luci, using my fountain pen.

Luci is going to represent our inner fears, our worst instincts, the demon within us, so I played around using some shadow like patterns on him taking more inspiration from my favourite video games like Kingdom Hearts, notably Darkside and its shadowy form.

For his eyes, you can tell I am a huge fan of Spider Man and I really wanted to use that to create these demonic, yet empathetic and highly expressive eyes. Inside there, there's still someone.

For the stances, and his allure, I took some inspiration from Death Note and more precisely Ryuk with his nonchalant yet relatable way of acting.

Recently, I have been thinking about what this is to me, and what I envision... And I want to hit in the feels, I want it to feel genuine, human. I want this to be real. I don't care to have millions of followers. I just want to express what is in here, and maybe have one person to listen, maybe even relate, in real life.

I am not chasing algorithms anymore.

It's not a good cartoon without a nostalgic highlight reel.

For over a year, I have been trying to tell a story.

For me, that meant developing a distinct visual and musical style, creating characters and a world for those to live in. It meant giving them life, creating artwork, animations, sound presets, studying cartoons and my favourite musicians to create something worth sharing: a bit of my soul, in the hope others see a bit of their own in there too.

Every sketch you see was hand drawn, every frame animated manually, every beat sequenced on an early morning commute, every track mastered with the knowledge and experience I gained over 8 years of trying to make my own music from A to Z and the last couple years I learnt how to animate.

Like a kid who ditched their kiddy wheels on a bike, in this highlight reel these characters somehow seem to start telling a story of their own, not the one I wrote. The one they wrote for themselves.

I hope they speak to you.

A while back I released my first EP, including a final track called Pacific Café, marking a major shift in how I write and tell a story. Pacific Café is where worlds opened. I always wanted to make this animatic to tell this story. It was 90% done and I left it there... For months.
